Hyo S. Kim, MD Laser and Acupuncture Center

Dr. Kim is a board certified anesthesiologist and acupuncturist. She was trained at the University of Chicago Hospital and the Northwestern Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois as an anesthesiologist. She began learning acupuncture at UCLA, and then received extensive training in South Korea, Japan, Puerto Rico and the U.S.

Dr. Kim acquired the application of low level laser (laser) treatment that she combines with various types of acupuncture. While she has obtained a vast clinical experience in pain management through acupuncture treatment, she recently acquired the methods of low level laser acupuncture to her patients with various types of pain and ailment. The clinical observations on her patients suggest that the effectiveness of low laser acupuncture complements traditional acupuncture treatment. In Fact, the some of her patients prefer to the low level laser treatment over the traditional needle treatment, due to its painless and immediate response to the application.

Low Level Laser Acupuncture Therapy:

Although the low level laser acupuncture (red light) therapy was originated from Russia some 40 years ago, an improved device (infrared, red, green, blue and now yellow lights) was introduced into medical acupuncture in Europe in 2001 and in the USA in 2007. Low level laser beams can be used on body, skull or ear, thus stimulating these points. Dr. M. Weber of Weber Medical in Germany that developed Weberneedle devices indicated that they result in an increased level of oxygen supply as well as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production in the tissue metabolism. Some of the general effects of low level laser acupuncture therapy are listed below:

  • Anti-inflammatory effects that improve immunologic activity in the body;
  • Stimulation of interferon, interleukins, TNF-alpha and of the proliferation of lymphocytes;
  • Improvement of anti-oxidant enzymatic system with anti-toxic effects;
  • Normalization of cell membrane potential; and
  • Reactions in tissue including decongestion, alleviation of pains, improved blood flow and reparation of tissue.

Dr. Kim’s Safe Therapeutic Approach To Medical Acupuncture And Low Level Laser Acupuncture:

Dr. Kim provides therapies on neurological, musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory, circulatory and gynecological disorders, and other disorders, e.g. chronic fatigue syndrome, immune system tonification, addiction control, skin problems, etc. To deal with these medial disorders, Dr. Kim utilizes various types of low level laser acupuncture techniques depending on her patient’s medical condition.

Realizing that every patient reacts differently from the application of medical devices, she elects treatment options uniquely suitable for her particular patient by carefully diagnosing and consulting with her patient. Dr. Kim utilizes the following medical devices:

  • Meridian Regulatory Acupuncture (Puerto Rico)
  • Scalp and Local Acupuncture (Japan)
  • Trigger Point Acupuncture (USA)
  • Electro Acupuncture combined with Infrared Heating Treatment
  • Low Level Laser Irradiation by Weber Medical (Germany)
  • Low Level Laser Irradiation by R.J. Laser (Germany)
  • Auricular Acupuncture
The uniqueness of Dr. Kim’s therapeutic approach comes from combing her many years of practical experience in surgical operations as an anesthesiologist, and vigorous training in acupuncture and laser medicine. In short, she has been benefitting her patients by building a bridge between the western and eastern medicine. Her clinic is located in the middle of all the Metro Detroit cities.

Here's What A Recent Client Had To Say About Acupuncture:

"A friend of mine had gone to an acupuncture specialist in Florida and recommended acupuncture treatment to stop smoking. I had tried everything else for many years and quite frankly I wish I would've seen Dr. Kim a long time ago. After just 1 acupuncture treatment I have successfully stopped smoking for 2 and a half years now."

Acupuncture Therapy:

Quoting from an article from the University of Chicago on-line library, the definition of acupuncture “is the practice of puncturing the skin with needles at certain anatomical points in the body to relieve specific symptoms associated with many diseases. The anatomical points (acupuncture points) are thought to have certain electrical properties, which affect chemical neurotransmitters in the body.”

For thousand years in orient, the dual nature of autonomic (parasympathetic and sympathetic) nerve system was recognized in terms of negative (yin) and positive (yang) energies. These energies are to be circulating along the meridians, which are channels of electromagnetic impulses (energy-Qi) distributed all over the body. The goal of therapy in acupuncture is to reestablish the harmonious interplay of meridians. Balancing them restores the bodily functions to a state of dynamic equilibrium (healthful condition of the body). It is believed that there are 12 main meridians and nearly 2,000 acupuncture points in the body.
